The Theatre of the World Festival is a celebration of arts aimed at families as it presents innovative art for all ages. The Festival features between eight and ten arts events (plays, music, dance, film) in indoor venues located in the Drama Department Building as well as an outdoor 'Fringe Festival' with music, interactive crafts, face painting, demonstrations and a giant puppet parade. |

Jungle Book
Adapted by SDSU’s own Margaret Larlham, this is an updated version of the original classic Jungle Book stories written by Rudyard Kipling. Set in a secret jungle in Balboa Park - a magic place between the leaves and vines bounded by park, zoo, freeways… Mowgli, a lost child, brought up by wolves, learns the “laws” of the jungle from Bagheera the panther and Baloo the bear and encounters the unscrupulous Shere Kahn.
Will Power
Will Power is an award winning actor, rapper, playwright and educator. Viewed as a pioneer in the genre of Hip-Hop Theatre, fusing music, rhymed language and choreography to produce compelling work. Will Power has agreed to lead an intensive short workshop with a group of undergraduates and present an open rehearsal at the Festival
Diversionary Theatre's The Daddy Machine
Telling the story of ‘two moms, two kids, one singing dog and 62 dads,’ is – if not the first – among the first stage productions for family audiences representing lesbian moms and their children. The Friday evening performance will be followed by an in-depth conversation with the cast and the playwright led by faculty from SDSU’s Women’s Studies Department.
Yale Strom AND Hot Pstromi
A new spin on an old sound. –Yale Strom is a talented musician, artist, photographer, filmmaker, author, playwright and educator. Over the past twenty years, he has made a name for himself by combining the traditional Jewish Klezmer music with lyrics that concentrate on present day social issues.
The Cloud Gatherer
An epic tale for young audiences using puppetry and music about AIDS and global warming. Set on the continent of Africa, two young children must discover why the clouds have disappeared and why the crops are dying. Their treacherous journey takes them across Africa where they battle the Cloud Gatherer and help restore the delicate balance of nature while facing their deepest fears.
Miss Navajo - Film
The film follows the path of 21-year-old Crystal Frazier, a not-so-fluent Navajo speaker and self-professed introvert, as she undertakes the challenges of the pageant. It is through Crystal's quiet perseverance that we see the strength and power of Navajo womanhood revealed.
El Tigre
In this Walter Mitty escapade a whirlwind of adventure takes place in the children’s minds. The story of orphans who live through the imagination allowing them not to suffer the ravages of the orphanage, who uses modern and Mesoamerican icons, artists and heroes as their mentors, confidantes and friends. The story was inspired by the children of Francisco I. Madero orphanage in Mexico City.
Improvisation
COME PLAY WITH US! Join SDSU's student improvisation troupe in an interactive workshop where YOU are the performers! Suitable for ages 7 and up.
Stay Tuned
Step Up Theatre's new piece, Stay Tuned, focusing on elementary issues such as bullying, nutrition, diversity, friendship, community and much more... In true Step UP style, the show incorporates step, dance, Sign Language, Spanish, puppets, and 100% original script work written by the cast members of Step UP Theatre.
The 'Fringe' Festival
Our outdoor, interactive festival that includes arts, crafts, music, food, face painting, stilt walkers, and a Giant Puppet Parade! Check it out from 11:00-3:00.
The McKerrow Awards for Excellence in Innovative Theatre for All Ages
Named for Theatre of the World Founding Artistic Director, Dr. Maggi McKerrow, the School of Theatre, Television and Film honors individuals and organizations who have a commitment to providing excellence to children, youth and families. 2008 Awardees are:
- Jose Cruz Gonzalez - Excellence in professional artistry in Theatre for Young Audiences
- Playwright’s Project - Excellence in community-based theatre with/or for children and youth
- Mary Pat Hutt - Excellence in theatre and media education
